Area rugs are used to cover both large and small sections of a room. They can be placed in front of the couch, around the dining area, or at the side of the bed. Over time, these rugs often catch grease stains, trap dust and other impurities. Regular cleaning is needed to keep these special carpets free of stains, allergens and dirt. The bad news is that grease stains can damage your beautiful carpets and area rugs. The good news is that cleanup can be done in a few steps, as long as you’re quick about doing so.
How to Get Rid of Grease Stains
If a large quantity of greasy substance gets onto your rug, the first thing you should do is scrape off the grease with a dull knife to remove as much of it as possible. Blotting with a paper towel is also a great idea. Next, pour a few drops of isopropyl rubbing alcohol onto a white piece of cloth and use it to remove the grease stain. Please make sure the alcohol does not seep into the grease pile, as this may weaken the latex bond in the rug.
It should be noted that you should never rub the cloth in a circular motion. Ideally, you should rub it one direction at a time. If this does not work, you can use a detergent solution, which can be made by adding 1 quart of water to a 1/4 full teaspoon of dishwashing detergent that is free of bleach and lanolin. Use a white paper towel in a blotting motion to work the detergent onto the affected area until the grease stain lifts off. Use a spray bottle filled with water to rinse the area and blot gently with a paper towel to remove excess moisture.
When this is done, spray the same area again but do not blot this time. Just place several paper towels on the area that you have cleaned and press them down using a large book or some other sort of heavy object, even a brick. Give it a few hours to dry. When dealing with stubborn grease stains, you can apply a few drops of 3% hydrogen peroxide solution and blot until the stain comes off.
